VOIP FAQ
Thinking of making the switch to VOIP calling and have questions? Our VOIP FAQ is here to help
Do I need to buy all new phones or can I use the existing phones in my house?
No in most cases you will be able to use the existing telephones inside your house to interface with the VOIP network. However if you choose to upgrade to VOIP telephones you will get additional calling features. Be sure to check this with your VOIP service provider prior to installation.
Do I have to change my existing telephone number?
This was true in the past but not any longer. VOIP resellers and service providers have made changes to allow you to port your existing number over to a VOIP calling plan.
Are VOIP calls the same quality as standard calls?
Yes VOIP calling is the same quality, and in many cases it may even be better quality than the calls you are currently making.
Do power interruptions affect VOIP calls?
If your home or business loses power VOIP generally won't work. Unless you have backup power or generator power, the router, gateway and phone won't have power to function.
How does VOIP handle 911 and emergency calling?
VOIP service providers and resellers are working closely with emergency response officials to ease this situation. Many systems have difficulty automatically transmitting location based data over VOIP calls. Legislation is currently being enacted to make this a requirement in the very near future.
